Managing Radio - Phil Riley

Phil’s radio career started in 1980. He has extensive programming experience gained from his roles as a Presenter, Producer, and Programme Controller. Phil was responsible for the successful launch of XTRA-AM in 1989 in Birmingham.

In 1990 he was appointed managing director of Leeds 96.3 Radio Aire, which he managed from near-bankruptch to profitability. Phil has been active in the development of digital radio, sitting on the board of the Digital Radio Development Bureau (DRDB). Phil has held main board membership of The Radio Centre for over 10 years.

Diversity and Equality in Education

The Same But Different research project was a HEFCE funded project looking at managing diversity and equality in higher education. Part of the project was to research and create a resource that Diversity and Equality managers in HE could use to help them realise how important it is to embrace difference in, and outside, the classroom.

The resource pack was created by the Centre for Media, Arts and Performance.

The Internet and Journalism - Andy Griffee and Alan Kirby

Alan Kirby is the Editor for The Coventry Telegraph, he joined the Telegraph as a reporter 35 years ago. He has since worked as News Editor, Production Editor, Features Editor, Deputy Editor and was appointed Editor in January 1999.

Andy Griffee is Controller for English Regions at The BBC. He became controller in March 1999 after just 11 years working for the BBC.

Together they talk about the influence the internet has had on Journalism, and their plans for future internet based news delivery methods.

Can we trust the International Media? - John O Oucho and Fred Mudhai

John O Oucho holds a PhD in Population Geography and was a post-doctoral fellow of the Carolina Population Center in the university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, U.S.A. in 1982-3. He has taught at the University of Nairobi (2 decades), University of Ghana (3 years) and University of Botswana (8 years). He was elected Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) in 1989 and the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) in 2003. He is a well traveled and well published academic and has participated in many international conferences, presenting papers and charing sessions.

Here he discusses the way that African nations have been portrayed by the British media, alongside Coventry University academic Dr Fred Mudhai.

Getting into Radio - Madeleine Kent

Madeleine did a degree in media Culture and Communications at Coventry University. She then worked at the bear 102 in Stratford for two years. She has also worked as Midlands reporter for GWR, she then accepted a job as News Editor of Kix. She has also worked for Chrysalis on Heart FM/DNN and Galaxy, before becoming news editor at CN radio. She is soon to start working for advertising agency McCann Erickson.
