A Midlands TV icon speaks to John Mair to end the current highly successful Coventry Conversations series.

Nick Owen is on television nightly. He is the main presenter of BBC Midlands Today and has been for nine years.

His is one of the best known faces on TV; from his early days at Central TV through to TVAM, Good Morning with Anne and Nick and the ITV Midweek Sports Special.

But what is the secret of TV presentation? Is it as easy as Nick makes it look and how long will he get away with telling such awful jokes?

In this talk, Nick shares the secrets of a lifetime spent in front of the camera.

Tackling Consumer Affairs - Ed Doolan, BBC

Ed Doolan presents BBC WM’s popular consumer affairs programme every weekday from 10am to 1pm and his Biographical series “The Other Side of ……..” which is heard Sundays at 12 noon and Fridays at 8pm. Ed was born in Sydney, Australia on July 20th, 1941. After a ten year career as a school teacher in Sydney, Edinburgh and London, he moved to Cologne, taking his first step into broadcasting with Radio Deutsche Welle, the German World Service, in 1970. From 1974 to 1982 Ed was a presenter at Birmingham’s first commercial radio station BRMB, joining BBC WM in 1982. Between 1982 and 1987, Ed also presented ‘Tuesday People’ and ‘Doolan at Large’ on BBC Two, as well as standing in for Jimmy Young and Bryan Hayes on Radio 2 in the 1990’s.

Ed began his current consumer programme on BBC WM in 1988. There have been over 5000 programmes over the past 18 years and the programme continues to be one of the most listened-to in the region.

He is well known for pioneering social action broadcasting, tackling dishonest and cavalier traders on behalf of the consumer. Ed also takes on the big utilities, the councils of the West Midlands and even areas of national government if an injustice has been done.

Ed aims to ‘make a difference’ to the less fortunate and in his radio and charity work he can proudly claim to have had great success, being heavily involved in the many charities carrying his name.

Ed has won numerous broadcasting awards and in 2004 became the first BBC Local Radio personality to be inducted in to the Radio Academy Hall of Fame.

He was awarded the MBE in 1998 and was the first person to be awarded Honorary Doctorates by all three Birmingham based Universities.

Getting into Television - Jim Sayer, Maverick TV

Maverick’s MD Jim Sayer, appointed just last year, is the latest name to accept the invite to come and converse in Coventry. He spoke to Philip Draycott about the challenges of independent production and ways in to TV for young people and others. Jim’s credits as Executive Producer for Maverick include The Property Chain and Taboogie for Channel 4, Selling Yourself for Five and Who’ll Age Worst for UKTV.

Prior to coming to Maverick, he was responsible for include the highly acclaimed series Brat Camp for Channel 4, Manhunt for BBC One and Where Do We Come From? for Five.
